Old guard blocks sports reform bill

The Hindu Reports
"Attempts to bring about transparency, accountability and efficiency in the functioning of Indian sports federations and the way sports is run in the country received a serious setback as senior ministers — many of whom wear second hats as heads of various sporting bodies — ganged up to block approval of the proposed National Sports Development Bill 2011 at the Union Cabinet meeting on Tuesday."
"The move to bury the Bill came, surprisingly, from within the Congress and was backed by its allies in the UPA government. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee is learnt to have told the Cabinet that Parliament would never approve this Bill in its present form or scenario."

Like majority of the people in the country, I am not very surprised. What else you can expect from beneficiaries of the fund allocation to various ill managed sports administrative bodies in the country. Mr Kalmadi was (or is he still) Indian Olympic Association president since 1996 and every one knows his contribution to Indian sports, and yet no questions asked. Being president of IOA for so long, shouldn't he held responsible for India's poor performance in international sports ? I think he should. It's lack of accountability that brings these kind of corrupt and greedy folks into the system. They know that there is lot of money involved and more that nobody is going to ask any questions on how the money is spent and what benefit the spending's brought in.

I am actually surprised know that BCCI and IPL used to get (still gets I think) various tax exceptions from the government.  BCCI is also exempted from entertainment tax it seems.  (An Allahabad High Court verdict changed this and BCCI supposed to pay income tax starting from 2006 June. Not sure about other taxes like entertainment tax etc). When income tax is made mandatory for even for a common man earning 2-3 lakhs a year and struggling meet the expenses of his day today life has to pay his contribution to the country as income tax, for a body controlled by the richest and powerful of the country all tax exempted ! Govt willing to increase excise duty for Petrol an Diesal, but don't what to Tax BCCI. Add cess for education, infrastructure and what not, but can't tax BCCI ! Black and while money pouring in in IPL and no tax applicable, but we common man have to bear the brunt of crude oil price hikes on world market, inflation, depression  everything else happening around the world!

"The Bill faced the fiercest opposition from Maharashtra strongman and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and his Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) colleague Praful Patel. In the present Cabinet, three Ministers — C.P. Joshi, Vilasrao Deshmukh and Farooq Abdullah — head cricket associations in their respective States, while Mr. Pawar is the president of the International Cricket Council. Mr. Patel heads the All-India Football Federation. "

Are you surprised, not really isn't it ?

"Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah also took strong exception to the introduction of the Bill and especially to the age bar provision. “I am very young and can do all sorts of things that even youngsters cannot do. This Bill is not feasible,'' he is learnt to have remarked."

hmmm Mr.Farooq Abdullah very young at mind and confidently challenging the India's next-gen !

Dr. Singh lauded the Bill in its present form and termed it “good legislation,”
Mr. Prime minister's silence is really annoying. Every one else in the Ministry makes lot of noise all for the wrong reasons and it is kind of surprising that Mr. Prime minister's voice is never heard in the public when a group of ministers is trying sabotage a bill with lot good intentions for protecting their own personal interests. Being a man of integrity is fine, but when every one around is going around taking care of their of personal interests taking advantage of the democratic set up in this country, sitting quite is not something people of the country expect from a prime minister. For UPA-1 it was because of the coalition politics that made Mr Prime Minister to make compromises and I am not sure what is stopping Mr, Prime Minister this time around. Be a "real prime minister" Mr. Prime minister.

Appreciate Youth Affairs Minister Ajay Maken's intentions and the daring attempt to taken on the likes of BCCI and political heavy weights controlling nations Cricket lobby.
